Travel Photography Tip – Speed and How to Capture it in a Still Image

Bullock Cart Race at Rural Olympics in Kila Raipur is all about speed. Capturing speed in a still image was the challenge. For capturing that, I decided to do a pan shot on a slow shutter speed.

To slow down the shutter speed to a desirable level (1/50), I narrowed the aperture and shot at f/11, using the lowest ISO (100). To get crisp focus on the expression of the bullock cart racer, I used AI Servo AF mode. I spot-metered on a specific area of the cart which would roughly be around the 18% grey mark, kneeled and panned along the action.

The result was a remarkable feel of speed and motion – with the background visibly blurred. What makes this image interesting is intensity and grit on the face of the bullock cart rider. This image has been used as a part of my Kila Raipur Travelogue in Smart Photography (June 2014).
